Summer 2026

ENGINEERED FROM EXPERIENCE

created from UHMWPE fibers that are 10 times stronger than steel by weight. Joe’s successful route, which he dubbed The Southwest Classic, involved traveling for 11 days mostly above 10,000 feet, linking the highest peaks of the range, and carrying everything he needed on his back with the new BD Beta Light Backpack. These are the experiences that drive our innovation. From Hillary Gerardi’s need for ultimate efficiency during skyrunning races—resulting in our new Distance Carbon Z FKT Poles—to RMI guides logging over two million vertical feet in just one summer with our apparel, our gear is rigorously engineered and tested by those who live and breathe the sports we serve. For some we may be a hiking brand. Others, an ultra-running brand. For most, a climbing and skiing brand. But for all, we’re unquestionably a brand building innovative equipment and apparel for mountain movement.

One hundred miles. Fourteen, 14,000-foot mountains. Six-thousand calories and everything else you need strapped to your back. The year was 2018, and BD Athlete Joe Grant found the experience he was looking for while establishing an early unsupported FKT of Nolan’s 14 in Colorado. During the 49-hour, 38-minute effort, Joe was carrying a final prototype of what would become the Distance 8-liter pack. Designed in collaboration with Joe, our Distance Packs seamlessly blended running vest technology with our deep knowledge of alpine climbing packs to create a truly innovative piece of equipment—a pack that would allow Joe to travel at his chosen pace and explore his own vision of mountain movement. In the years following, Joe’s journeys evolved, just like our mountain packs, growing in miles and capacity. During a 2023 attempt of his latest project—a 400-mile link-up in Colorado’s San Juan Mountains, Joe walked out with his gear in his hands. The prototype pack was in tatters. So, Joe and our designers went back to the drawing board. For a mission like that, the pack needed to be stronger. In the summer of 2024, Joe headed back into the San Juans, this time with an ultralight backpack utilizing Challenge Sailcloth UltraWeave™ fabric—

The speed you choose is entirely up to you.

WHEN THE MILEAGE HITS TRIPLE DIGITS

Our Distance Carbon Z FKT poles are athlete-inspired and provide ultralight performance on race day when you need to move fast and go far. Featuring a mesh glove FKT strap with a magnetic link for quick and easy transitions, these poles provide crucial support when the mileage hits triple digits.

During the 2024 Skyrunning season, Hillary was testing a new prototype, the Distance FKT, a running pole focused on efficient, fast-paced, long-distance mountain running. For BD Athlete Hillary, the new prototype solved a unique issue for her: many short climbs over a long race. The transition from ascent to descent is challenging when running long distances, and when running at an elite level, any time lost during this transition can make or break a race.

This was the ethos for the FKT system: A magnetic interface for easy attachment and detachment be- tween the pole and a lightweight, breathable glove.

PUTTING IT TO THE TEST The FKT glove strap is comfortable and breathable even after 50+ miles of running and features a light- weight mesh construction strengthened by a Dynex lining. The attached magnet allows it to attach to the pole. The magnet falls onto a grooved landing zone on top of the grip, and with a simple and satisfying click, the gloves attach to the pole. To detach the gloves, the grip has a spring-loaded latch you pull down to disengage the magnet and slide the glove out. Both motions can be performed while moving and without looking at the pole—there is audible and tactile feedback when engaging and disengaging the gloves from the pole. Lightweight and efficient, the FKT system eases the burden runners feel during transitioning from ascent to descent.

There were 10 climbs in the race, and I was able to use the poles for all of them without feeling the ‘bur- den’ of the transition,” says Hillary.

There were 10 climbs in the race, and I was able to use the poles for all of them without feeling the DESIGN The ultimate goal would be that you don’t have to look at the poles when you’re using them. You can just do it,” says Paul Leonard, BD’s Mountain Busi- ness Unit Director. “”

Remember that Skyrunning race with Hillary? She came in 4th, proving the theory that the Distance FKT poles improve efficiency in the mountains.

“There is something so special about pushing hard in the mountains, and then pausing to notice an eagle circling overhead, or a flower just peeking out from between two rocks. TWO MILLION VERTICAL FEET

Distance 2 Vest - $150 Distance 6 Vest - $180

One trip up and down Washington’s iconic Mt. Rainier is 18,000 vertical feet, or what our guide partners at RMI call just another day at the office. While we relentlessly test all of our products here in Black Diamond’s QC Lab, when it comes time to prove those findings out in the field, we lean heavily on RMI’s guides to put our equipment and apparel to work in their backyard lab—a field-testing grind that can’t be replicated. Eighteen thousand vertical feet per trip, around 120 trips per season. That’s more than two million vertical feet of field testing per season. If there’s a failure point, they’ll find it.

For over 50 years, RMI Expeditions has led climbers of all levels on Rainier’s iconic routes. Whether you’re aiming for your first summit, building expedition skills, or training for bigger peaks, they offer a full range of programs led by professional mountain guides committed to safety, challenge and adventure.
